A/H1N1 Influenza Response in Ukraine

With continuing spread of A/H1N1 all over the world and with outbreaks of disease registered in Ukraine, the United Nations System organisations stand ready, together with other international and bilateral partners to support Ukraine's effort in fighting the infection.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Ukraine is committed to continue coordination of the international community efforts along with the Government of Ukraine to generate a comprehensive response to the infection spreading.

Development of Influenza Pandemic A/H1N1 in the World

On 12 April, 2009  - The first cases of influenza-like illness were registered in Verakruz, Mexico. A few days later, April 15-17, severe cases of pneumonia with a rapid course were reported. On 23 April a new type of influenza virus A (H1N1) was revealed in Mexico.

As of 26 April, 38 cases were registered in Mexico and the United States. On 27 April first cases in Canada and Spain were detected. According to the criteria defined by WHO, the Organization announced the 4th stage of the epidemic, two days later, on 29 April, the phase was increased to 5th. 

At the beginning of June 115 deaths, caused by the new flu, were registered, mostly in Mexico, the United States and Canada. On 6 June the 6th phase of the epidemic - a pandemic was stated.

As of 25 October 2009, there have been over 440,000 laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 and more than 5,700 deaths worldwide reported to WHO.
