In Odessa, UN Country Team members visited Centre for Migrants Advice and took part in the 5th Advisory Board Meeting of EU Border Assistance Mission to Ukraine and Moldova - EUBAM. Financed by EU and implemented by UN Development Programme, EUBAM is aimed at establishing a system of border and customs controls and border surveillance which meets European standards and the legitimate needs of the citizens of each country. At its fifth quarterly meeting, the Advisory Board reviewed the Mission’s activity from December 2006 to February 2007 and approved the Missions’ Action Plan for 2007. EUBAM project is an excellent example of regional cooperation and sharing of lessons learnt and experience beyond EU states’ borders”, stated UN Resident Coordinator Mr. O'DONNELL. “It’s also a good model of great cooperation and coordination of trounsboundary project between two multilateral organizations – UN and EU”, he added.

Later this day, UN officials met with Head of Odesa Oblast State Administration Mr. Ivan PLACHKOV. During this discussion, Mr. O’DONNELL informed about several UN initiatives to be of potential interest for the local authorities. In particular, he suggested to consider cooperation on the Global Compact initiative to promote corporate social responsibilities among Odesa companies; new regional Black Sea Trade and Investment Project to be supported by Greek and Turkish Governments; Municipal Governance and Sustainable Development Programme to address energy efficiency and water supply and sanitation issues in the region. Mr. PLACHKOV replied “Odesa and region are destined to impetuous development since we are ready to cooperate on all of the mentioned directions and suggested projects”.

On March 14, 2007 Odesa Mayor Mr. Eduard GURVITS greeted the UN delegation and appreciated work done by the UN agencies for the last several years. During this meeting, the participants discussed current situation and the most topical issues to be addressed in Odesa, as well as UN current and future projects to be implemented in the region.
