In 1999, the UN Secretary General Kofi ANNAN has launched the Global Compact with two main objectives: (i) to make its 10 principles on human rights, labour, corruption and the environment part of business strategy and operations around the world and (ii) to facilitate the development of partnerships between the private sector and the Governments, UN agencies, civil society to address the most topical challenges of today’s world.

“It’s more important then ever before for business community in Ukraine to give impetus for even more widespread practicing of corporate social responsibility and to contribute in resolving the most topical issues in your country’s agenda”, stated Ms. Ruken TEKES CALIKUSU, Representative of the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Ukraine.

Global Compact initiative was successfully launched in Ukraine in April 2006. Lviv hosts the first regional launch to be followed by presentations in Donetsk and Odesa in 2007. Currentely, the number of GC members in Ukraine has reached 47 including 26 multinational and large Ukrainian companies, 10 business associations, 2 federation of employers and trade unions, 3 small and medium enterprises and 6 non-governmental organizations.

“Many companies acknowledge today that in growing competitiveness of Ukrainian economy the efficiency of the enterprises can be improved by means of adherence to the principles of the corporate social responsibility”, said Dmytro AFTANAS, President of the Lviv Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “Lviv Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already signed Global Compact. And we co-organize this launch being committed to facilitate further promotion and observance of Global Compact 10 principles”, he added.

The Global Compact is a unique national and international network of companies, helping it’s participants to impove the philosophy of business, plinciples and codes of behaviour and to share experiences. The mission of the GC network Ukraine is to promote corporate social responsibility initiatives in Ukraine in line with the 10 Global Compact principles, which are:

Human Rights
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights;
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labour Standards
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour;
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility;
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-corruption
Principle 10: Businesses should work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery.
