Kyiv, 5 December 2006. In observance of the International Volunteer Day the All-Ukrainian UN Youth Summit “Development of Volunteerism and Social Partnerships in Ukraine” was opened in Ukrainian House.

One hundred fifty young leaders of youth organizations from twenty seven regions of Ukraine will spend three days discussing key issues of development of volunteerism and social partnerships in Ukraine. The objective is to strengthen youth activism and organizations in Ukraine by promoting volunteerism, work with government representatives of all levels and youth’s active participation in decision making. At the Summit, best examples of social responsibility and participation in public life at village, city and country level will be shown.

In Ukraine, 11.1 million people are under 35 years old. The level of unemployment among youth is 13,4% while national unemployment rate averages 9,1%. Still, young people believe in their potential and 68% believe that a determined and diligent young person can succeed in his or her life at this stage in Ukraine. 21% of public servants in Ukraine are young people under 35 and it is critical to provide further support to young leaders in taking active role in country’s development processes.

For five years UN in Ukraine has been promoting participation of young people from all over the Ukraine in open dialogue with the government on Millennium Development Goals by organizing All-Ukrainian UN Youth summit. This year Summit is devoted to volunteerism and young people role in social partnership in the country.

Young people represent the future of this country. The way the youth potential and energies are nurtured and developed will determine prosperity of this nation in 21st century and beyond. For several years UN in Ukraine has been promoting the sense of individual responsibility and active participation of young people in public life. By organizing annual Youth Summit, we hope to accelerate youth activism and encourage young Ukrainians to take active participation in Ukraine’s reform process”, stated UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Francis O’DONNELL welcoming the participants.
