17-18 April 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine – The UN office in Ukraine presented its publications during the Infromation Fair in the Verkhovna Rada. The latest UN system books, surveys, brochures including materials from UNICEF, UNDP, ILO, UNAIDS, IOM, UN DPI and WB. Organized by the Indiana University Parliamentary Development Project this event gathered 36  international institutions and Ukrainian civil society organizations that introduced their publications to the memebers of the Ukrainian Parliament and their assistants.  

17 April 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. Ukraine has the most severe HIV epidemic in Europe, with an estimated adult prevalence of 1.63%.  In order to develop a more effective national AIDS programme, the UN System in Ukraine strongly recommends extending its deadline beyond April 15, 2008 and revising the processes for its development so that the Programme can serve as a guide for the efforts of all state- and non-state partners.

16 April, 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States Kori Udovički has met today Minister of Economy of Ukraine Bohdan Danylyshyn.

Kyiv, Ukraine, 16 April 2008 - International experts, government executives from Eastern Europe, business leaders, think-tanks and NGOs shared the experiences of poverty alleviation and social inclusion through multilateral partnerships at an international conference organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Conference's participants called for an immediate response to resist further scaling up of poverty in Ukraine.

15 April 2008. Kyiv – Kori Udovički, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and UNDP Regional Director for Europe and CIS has arrived on her first official five-day visit to Ukraine from 15 till 19 April. During her stay in Kyiv, on 16 April, Ms. Udovički will open an International Conference on Poverty Alleviation organized by UNDP in Ukraine.

14 April 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine - The international conference “Modern challenges of protecting people rights and freedoms” has been launched today in the Parliament of Ukraine devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Ombudsman institution in Ukraine. Addressing over 100 participants from 50 countries, UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine called to uphold human rights with rigourous accountability.

13 April 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. On the 14th of April at 10.00 a.m. a one-day International Conference “Modern challenges for human rights and freedoms” will be launched in the Parliament of Ukraine devoted to the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 10th anniversary of establishment of Ombudsman insitution in Ukraine.

11 April 2008, Kyiv - In September 2000 at the Millennium Summit in New York Ukraine signed the UNMillennium Declaration”. By signing the Declaration Ukraine took on the responsibility to achieve the Millennium Goals in the sphere of development till 2015 in six development areas: ensuring poverty reduction, quality life-long education, sustainable environmental development, improving maternal health and reducing child mortality, reducing and slowing down the spread of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis and promoting gender equality.

Кyiv, 10 April 2008 - The results of a study launched today by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) show that children use alcohol, take drugs and begin sexual life at an increasingly young age.

The United Nations in Ukraine in partnership with the Ministry of Environment of Ukraine and with the support of OLYMPUS company invites to participate in the national photography contest “ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE - CARING ABOUT OUR PLANET”.   Background: Global climate change is one of the most topical issues for humanity today. The most visible consequences of climate change can be such “extreme situations” as draughts, floods, storms, hurricanes, extremely hot day that will happen more often and also the danger of ecosystems disappearance. The water level is expected to go up and ocean currents are expected to drastically change due to climate change. As a result we will face problems with water supply and degradation of agricultural soil and forests.   Objective: This photography contest is aimed at raising awareness on importance of addressing climate change challenges and promoting responsible attitude towards environment among decision-makers and general public.   Deadline: Deadline for submitting photos - by 20 May 2008. 7 April 2008. Kyiv – Copenhagen.  – In 2008 World Health Day is observed with protecting health from climate change. Directly and indirectly, climate change profoundly affects health, leading to a substantial burden on health systems. 

4 April 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. The United Nations Country Team in Ukraine is concerned by the recent incorrect statements in the media outlets concerning UN assessment of the health system in Ukraine. “The experts of the UN agencies in Ukraine have not made statements and comments regarding the absence of the adequate health system in Ukraine”, stated Dr Igor Pokanevych,  Head of WHO Country Office in Ukraine and Head of the UN Ukraine Theme Group on Health.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is organizing an International Conference on Poverty Alleviation to be held on 16 April, 2008 from 9:30 to 18:00 in Kyiv, Ukraine at the Teacher's House (57 Volodymyrska, str.).   The Conference will be a one-day large-scale international event to discuss issues of poverty from the global, regional and Ukrainian perspectives. Conference goal During the Conference participants will have the possibility to discuss main poverty patterns in Ukraine and learn about best international practices and instruments that were successfully applied in other transition economies. Finally, the conference will promote business practices and strategic public-private partnerships that help reduce poverty. Conference participants will take part in two plenary sessions during which they will analyse overview of poverty in transition economies and poverty patterns in Ukraine. New-York-Kyiv: Mutual accountability between rich and poor States is the only way forward to achieving the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim said today, addressing a debate on how to best achieve those Goals by 2015.

On this day, the United Nations reaffirms its commitment to the rights and well-being of people with disabilities -- a commitment rooted in our fundamental principle of universal human rights for all, - says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message on the Inauguration of World Autism Awareness Day.

30 March 2008. Kyiv , Ukraine - Around 50 students of Kyiv Art School #1 participated in competition of paintings showing their perception of water in our day-to-day life. Initiated by the UN office in Ukraine, this competition was devoted to the World Water Day observed annually on 22 March worldwide.

26 March 2008. Kyiv - The first “Developing Business Partnerships for CSR” Forum has been organized today in “Opera” hotel in Kyiv by the United Nations office in Ukraine and BEST analytical center with the support of System Capital Management and Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The Forum gave a floor to discussion of the importance of establishing partnerships between businesses for the successful implementation of socially responsible strategies .

23 March, 2008. Kyiv - At the United Nations, March 22nd is World Water Day. We don't expect people to stop what they are doing and observe a moment of silence - but maybe they should, says UN Secretary-General in his op-ed "Water is Life" published in the Ukrainian daily Newpaper 24.

New York - In the message to the World Water Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon notes that this year, World Water Day coincides with the International Year of Sanitation, challenging us to spur action on a crisis affecting more than one out of three people on the planet. Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of the abysmal sanitation conditions endured by some 2.6 billion people globally.
