Kyiv-Minsk-Moscow, 21 March 2008 - UNICEF today launches Facts for Life Chernobyl, a publication that provides people living in areas affected by the Chernobyl accident with essential information to prevent child death and disease, and to protect women during pregnancy and childbirth.

21 March, 2008. Kyiv - On the 20th of March a special lesson “Teaching tolerance” took place in Kyiv lyceum “Leader”. Twenty 10th form students took part in the discussion on types of discrimination and ways to address them. The lesson was initiated and conducted by English language teacher Alexandra Rachova on the observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

March 21, 2008. New York - By proclaiming March 21st as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the General Assembly urged action to honour of the memory of the scores of peaceful protestors who were massacred on this day in 1960 in the South AfricaThere has been significant progress since then, not least through the dismantling of the apartheid system. But racism continues to plague too many individuals, communities and societies the world over.

20 March, 2008. Kyiv - Around 40 representatives of regional and national mass media outlets, experts from UN Agencies, state and non-governmental institutions have met to discuss Ukrainian chances in improving maternal health and reducing child mortality rates. The meeting with journalists took place on the eve of 7 April – World's Health Day in the framework of UN-led public information campaign dedicated to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Ukraine.

17 March 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ukraine announces the Nationwide Contest «JOURNALISTS FOR INFORMED CHOICE about employment abroad" for the most informative and resonant article that clarified realities of employment abroad, helps make conscious choice and avoid disappointment, secure oneself from traps. All journalists interested to learn more about migration are invited to participate in the Media Club that will be held on March 21, 2008, 11.00 am. in the IOM premises (8 Mykhailivska Street).

15 March 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. "The price of food is soaring. The threat of hunger and malnutrition is growing. Millions of the world’s most vulnerable people are at risk. An effective and urgent response is needed.", states UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his op-ed "The New Face of Global Hunger".   

What are the durable solutions for persons in need of international protection: integration, voluntary return or resettlement? These are the topics to be addressed at the workshop, hosted by the Government of Ukraine on 18-19 March 2008 in Kyiv.

12 March 2008. The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression Mr. Ambeyi Ligabo presented the report on his visit to Ukraine (May 2007) to the participants of the 7th session of the Human Rights Council .

In September 2008, ministers from all countries, heads of development agencies and civil society organizations from around the world will gather in Accra for the Third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (2-4 September). Expectations are that the Forum will agree on an Accra Action Agenda identifying concrete steps to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Declaration.

10 March 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. The United Nations Country Team in Ukraine* is concerned by the recent refoulement of a group of 11 Sri Lankans by the Ukrainian authorities. They were forcibly returned from Ukraine - a group of 5 persons on 4 March and another group of 6 people on 5 March - to their home country.

8 March, 2008.  At the 2005 World Summit, Governments of all nations agreed that "progress for women is progress for all". Yet the 10-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action revealed a serious gap between policy and practice in many countries. A lack of political will is reflected in the most telling way of all: lack of resources and insufficient budgetary allocations. That is why the theme of this International Women's Day is "Investing in Women and Girls".

26 February 2008, Washington/Geneve -- Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been recorded at the highest rates ever, according to a new report published today. The report presents findings from the largest survey to date on the scale of drug resistance in tuberculosis.

New York, 25 February - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is launching today a multi-year campaign to intensify action to end violence against women and girls.  At least one out of every three women in the world is likely to be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, according to UN estimates, and one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape.

13 February, 2008. Kyiv. After 15 years of negotiations since the submission of application back in 1993, Ukraine has finally obtained full-fledged membership in the World Trade Organization. This success could not be achieved without a team of excellent negotiators, to which UNDP Ukraine expert Iryna Kobouta has competently assisted throughout 2001-2008 and she will be awarded a medal "Za pratsu i zvytiagu" ("For Work and Merit") by the President of Ukraine.

February 12, 2008, Kyiv. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ukraine, a UN country team agency, and "Galnaftogas," one of the leading oil companies in Ukraine, signed a Memorandum of Intent to undertake joint and concerted efforts to combat trafficking in human beings and promote the legal and safe migration of Ukrainian citizens.

The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Ukraine Mr. Francis M. O’Donnell today expressed shock at the assassination attempt in Dili this morning on President José Manuel Ramos Horta of East Timor.  President Ramos Horta is said to be in a critical condition, now evacuated to Darwin, Australia.
