The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (formerly the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention) was set up in 1997, combining the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention and the United Nations International Drug Control Programme. It was established by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Kyiv, 17 April, 2007 Multi-stakeholder discussion on “Corporate Social Responsibility: from charity towards sustainable development” was conducted on Tuesday, 17 April, 2007 in Kyiv. The discussion was organized on the initiative of the GC network Ukraine members with the support of United Nations Global Compact team in Ukraine. The main objective of the discussion was to initiate a substantial dialogue between the main CSR players in Ukraine on the difference between charity and CSR and the external and internal reasons for businesses to emphasize predominantly on charity.

The large scale of the twin epidemics, HIV and drug use, represents one of the major public health problem in Ukraine. It is estimated that about 360,000 people are currently living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Ukraine (UNAIDS/WHO estimates 2004) while the population of Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) is estimated to be up to 560,000 (Social Monitoring Centre, 2003). Of the officially registered PLWHA at the end of 2004, more than 60% contracted HIV through sharing of injecting equipment during injecting drug use.

13 April 2007, KYIV. A consultative meeting with several leading democratic civil society and non-governmental organizations was held at United Nations House in Kyiv today, to review the current situation in country and identify further efforts needed for consolidating democracy.

Natalia, a young Ukrainian woman, has been injecting drugs for the last five years. Injecting drug use is a serious problem in Ukraine and is further compounded by high HIV prevalence among people who inject drugs. In Kiev for example the Ukrainian Ministry of Health estimated that in 2006, 49% of people who were injecting drugs in the capital were also infected with HIV.

A new UN-backed programme entitled “HIV/AIDS incidence reduction among young people in Southern and selected Eastern regions of Ukraine” has started its operations. The programme was launched in mid-March this year. It is financed by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and is implemented jointly by the three UN-agencies: UN Development Program (UNDP), UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

4 April 2007. Kyiv, Ukraine. The UN General Assembly has declared April 4 to be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. Numerous events are organized worldwide to raise awareness about landmines, explosive remnants of war, and progress toward their eradication.

The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Ukraine, Mr. Francis M. O’Donnell has called on Ukraine’s political leadership, legislative authority and judiciary and all political factions, to continue to adhere to the following principles in overcoming current political tensions.

On 19-23 March, 2007 the UNESCO-supported Regional Training on Advanced FOSS Solutions to Learning Management Systems has been organized and conducted by a team of UNDP-led project “Strengthening Educational Capacity of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University” at the Regional Academy of Informational Technology in Education located within the University.

Donetsk, March 21, 2007. On 20-21 March 2007 members of the UN Country Team in Ukraine – UN Resident Coordinator Francis M. O’DONNELL and Head of WHO Country Office Mr. Igor POKANEVICH visited Donetsk, joined by Ms. Severine DEBOOS, ILO Programme Coordinator in Central and Eastern Europe.

On 21-23 March Kyiv hosts the 2nd National Conference on Drugs Related Harm Reduction. On the eve of this important event, a UNDP-led project “Governance of HIV/AIDS in Ukraine” has published a specialised book ‘Coming Back to Life: substitution therapy with the eyes of experts and former intravenous drug users’.

Donetsk, 20 March, 2007 The UN Global Compact (GC) regional launch was conducted on Tuesday in Donetsk to invite Donetsk companies and agencies in voluntarily implementing the UN’s “ten commandments” of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This event was supported by the Donetsk Chamber of Commerce, local authorities and System Capital Management representing the company that already has become GC member.
