On observance of the International Day of Peace the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasizes "Peace is the United Nations' highest calling".

Kyiv, 19 September, 2007 The launch of the first edition of Responsible Business Directory Ukraine was conducted today in Kyiv at the conference hall of the Hyatt Hotel within the frameforke of the Global Compact Initiative in Ukraine, and in partnership with the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, European Business Association, American Chamber of Commerce and with the support of Ukraine Citizen Action Network (UCAN). During the launch the first bilingual publication in Ukraine featuring socially responsible companies that work in the local market and implement corporate social responsibility  practices in the country was presented.

On September 13-14, 2007, Kiev hosted the first consultation of Eastern Europe and Central Asia NGOs, as the part of the initiative "Beyond 2008"-a global forum on the 1998-2008 review of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Illicit Drugs. The event was organized by three regional lead organizations: the Anti-Drug Association from Serbia, the Central and Eastern European Harm Reduction Network (CEEHRN) and European Cities Against Drugs (ECAD), and supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In the course of the 14-15 September visit, Commissioner Kuneva met with Olexander Shnypko, Head of the State Committee of Ukraine for Technical Regulations and Consumer Policy, and took part in the Yalta European Strategy (YES) Summer University. On 15th September Commissioner Kuneva participated in the roundtable meeting with representatives of non-governmental consumer organizations, international donor organizations and educational institutions to discuss consumer protection policy issues in Ukraine.

On 16 September 2007 we commemorated the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, a groundbreaking international agreement that curbed and eventually reversed the thinning of the ozone layer, and ushered in a new era of environmental responsibility. By any measure, the Protocol has been a resounding success. Its 191 signatories have together phased out more than 95% of ozone-depleting substances, and we expect the Earth's protective ozone layer to return to its pre-1980 levels no later than 2075

17 September, 2007. This weekend an estimated 300 people in Kyiv gathered garbage on the Trukhaniv Island supporting the global campaign Clean up the World. The “Harvest of Garbage on Trukhaniv island” was initiated by the Kyiv Lions Club with support of the United Nations office in Ukraine

On September 14, 2007 former President of Estonia H.E. Mr. Arnold Rüütel met the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Mr. Francis M. O'Donnell.  Former President Rüütel is a non-executive advisor to President Viktor Yushchenko, and also serves as a Senior Special Fellow of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

15 September 2007, Trukhaniv island at 10:00 the Gather Harvest of Garbage on Trukhaniv Island event is organized by the Kyiv Lions Club in partnership with the United Nations office in Ukraine. This way the organizers decided to join the global initiative “” that mobilizes annually 35 000 people from over 100 countries under aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme. This year “Clean up the World” will take place worldwide on 14-16 September. We invite all conscious Kyiv residents to join us in cleaning our city.

11 September 2007, Rivne, Ukraine. 12 journalists from Rivne and region and more then 60 students-journalists of the Rivne International Economics and Humanitarian University discussed with the United Nations Development Programme experts topical environment issues in the framework of the information seminar "Today's Challenges: Climate Change and Energy Efficiency".

From the 27th August to 10th of September 2007 in Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Chernihiv oblasts the International campaign for volunteer movement promotion was held. During two weeks volunteers from Poland, Serbia, France, Germany, Denmark, Turkey and Japan jointly with Ukrainian peers worked on solving actual problems of Ukrainian communities. The initiative of UN Volunteers programme met the support of Chornobyl recovery and Development programme, Ukrainian Association for Youth Cooperation Alternative-V, and United Nations Development Programme Project “Human Security for Ukrainian Youth”.

Joint efforts of non-governmental, international organizations and Ukrainian Government ensured sustainability of international funding of the new program to fight one of the most crucial threats to public health and national security in Ukraine.

In Ukrainian society certain positive changes concerning the implementation of equality principles between women and men have been taking place in all sectors of life. However, following a thorough assessment of the development of Ukrainian legislation in line with guaranteeing equal rights and opportunities for women and men, the overall progress in other constituent parts within state gender policy is still estimated rather low in Ukrainian society, according to new research “Gender stereotypes and public attitude to gender problems in Ukrainian society”.

Odessa, 13-15 August: A UNDP-led Project “Governance of HIV/AIDS” has organized a training entitled “Human Rights and HIV” for leaders of refugees’ communities residing in the city’s temporary shelter for refugees. The participants discussed a number of questions and defined further steps helping raise HIV awareness among their communities in Ukraine.
