24 October 2006. Kyiv,Ukraine. The members of the UN Country Team in Ukraine met the Chairman of the Parliament and the Minister of Foreing Affairs and talked to media on UN-Ukraine cooperation.

On October 22-28, 2006 the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography pays a visit to Ukraine to discuss with the respective ministers and other senior officials the state of affairs with sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography in Ukraine and the ways to handle these problems.

In 1993 the UN General Assembly by resolution 47/196 designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The day before UNDP Millennium Development Goals Project and UN Office in Ukraine organized the press club devoted to the discussion of poverty eradication in Ukraine.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day, “Investing in agriculture for food security”, highlights the need for increased resources to fight hunger. The past two decades have seen a sharp decline in foreign assistance for agriculture. Many countries, including those most in need, have not allocated sufficient resources to farming and rural development.

On 13 October, 2006 the United Nations General Assembly appointed Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea as the world body’s next Secretary-General, to succeed Kofi Annan when he steps down on 31 December.

In accordance with AWP UKR1P201, UNFPA Ukraine has organized three days pilot seminar for the leaders of older volunteers’ movement in Vinnitsa - “Training volunteers for the work with older persons”. The event took place on 27-29 September 2006 in Vinnitsa. Related methodological and information materials were distributed among the seminar’s participants. A set of equipment – TV, DVD recorder, printer –was procured for regional volunteers’ centre of older persons to facilitate its educational and information work.

On 5 October, 2006 Mr. Francis M. O’Donnell, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Ukraine, and Mr. Alan Skurbaty, UN Human Rights Advisor, visited the Khodosivskiy Archaeological Complex in southern outskirts of Kyiv, following the official invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

On 19 September, 2006 the General Assembly formally launched the United Nations global counter-terrorism strategy with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan urging the ministerial-level gathering to “seize this moment”.

The Day was established in 1981 by A/RES/36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session every September. The General Assembly in 2001 voted unanimously to fix observance of the Day on 21 September as a day of non-violence and ceasefire.
