Nairobi, 6 February 2007The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reinforced the bond between fighting poverty and protecting the environment today by launching the joint Poverty and Environment Facility in Nairobi during the 24th session of the UNEP Governing Council.

Over 21-31 January 2007 the Government of Ukraine hosted the fact-finding mission by Mr. Okechukwu IBEANU, the UN Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights. The mission was conducted in close cooperation between the Government of Ukraine and the United Nations Country Team in Ukraine.

What: The UN Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights Mr. Okechukwu IBEANU pays a visit to Ukraine on 22-30 January, 2007. Following the invitation of the Government of Ukraine, Mr. Ibeanu will meet with the representatives of the respective ministries and civil society organizations to discuss the state of affairs in Ukraine with the transboundary movement and dumping of dangerous products and their effects on human rights. The press-conference on the results of this visit will be held on January 30.

In 2000, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 18th of December as International Migrants Day taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. Some 191 million people today reside outside the country of their birth or nationality. Whilst for many their journey has been a positive experience, exploitation and discrimination against many migrants is continuing.

Kyiv, 12 December 2006. Fighting the poverty problem should be the main task of the Government in Ukraine, stated the participants of the Forum “Fighting Poverty: a Matter of Human Rights”. The Forum was organized jointly by the UN Office in Ukraine and the International Tolerance Centre on occasion of the Human Rights Day, observed by the international community every year on 10 December.

December 2, 2006 The event dedicated to the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was held at the Culture and Arts Centre of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy aimed at raising awareness among Ukrainian youth of the problem of human trafficking and encouraging them to actively engage in countering modern day slavery.
