GENEVA (ILO news) − Child labour, especially in its worst forms, is in decline for the first time across the globe, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said today, in a new, cautiously optimistic report 1/ entitled “The end of child labour: Within reach”.

25 April, Kyiv. In response to growing interest in corporate social responsibility in Ukraine, the United Nations in Ukraine has today launched the Global Compact Initiative which involves over 34 Ukrainian and international businesses, associations and civil society organizations.

April 24, Kyiv – United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Director Kalman Mizsei today called on the world to remember the suffering caused by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. He also expressed confidence in the potential for the region’s social and economic recovery.

The Global Compact will be officially launched in Ukraine by UN top officials jointly with first signatories representing the leading Ukrainian and international business companies. Mr. Kalman MIZSEI, Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director will address the participants along with Mr. Anatoliy KINAKH, Head of Federation of Employers of Ukraine, Mr. Manuel ESCUDERO, the Head of UN Global Compact Networks, Mr. Francis O’DONNELL, the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine.

The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) announces the first call for proposals of innovative projects targeted at developing and strengthening democratic institutions, promoting human rights and ensuring all groups participation in the democratic process. The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) was established in July 2005 by the UN Secretary-General as a United Nations General Trust Fund under his authorities. UNDEF aims to provide strategic support to catalyze democracy and human rights initiatives around the world.

On 5-7 April 2006 UN Resident Coordinator and NDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Mr. Francis M.O'Donnell visited EUBAM project in Odesa and discussed possible joint projects with the members of UN country team in Chisinau.

On 3 April 2006 the United Nations in Ukraine along with the Ukrainian Mine Action Coordination Centre, the Mine Survivors Union hosted a press-conference devoted to the First International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action to be commemorated on 4 April 2006.
