The World Bank Lifted Suspension on the US$ 60 Million TB and HIV/AIDS Control Project

Geneva, 21 November 2006 – The global AIDS epidemic continues to grow and there in concerning evidence that some countries are seeing a resurgence in new HIV infection rates which were previously stable or declining.

UN Department of Public Information announced the Writing Contest on the theme of Human Rights and Poverty. It is open to entries in all UN official languages (including Russian and English) for children between the ages of 8-18 years. The deadline for entries is 10 December 2006.

The key reasons for the growing divide between Muslim and Western societies are not religious, but political, concludes a report presented to Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Istanbul on November 13, 2006.

On the first day of Ukrainian fashion week, the art and fashion world came together to promote AIDS awareness at a gala event in Kyiv. Top Ukrainian designer Alexey Zalevsiky unveiled his new spring-summer collection which featured men’s and women’s formal and casual wear with a difference.

27 October 2006. Kyiv. The first global initiative on avian influenza for private sector representatives, aiming to raise their awareness on the issue and consider the impact of AI outbreaks on business operations was conducted in Kyiv.

24 October 2006. Kyiv,Ukraine. The members of the UN Country Team in Ukraine met the Chairman of the Parliament and the Minister of Foreing Affairs and talked to media on UN-Ukraine cooperation.

On October 22-28, 2006 the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography pays a visit to Ukraine to discuss with the respective ministers and other senior officials the state of affairs with sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography in Ukraine and the ways to handle these problems.

In 1993 the UN General Assembly by resolution 47/196 designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The day before UNDP Millennium Development Goals Project and UN Office in Ukraine organized the press club devoted to the discussion of poverty eradication in Ukraine.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day, “Investing in agriculture for food security”, highlights the need for increased resources to fight hunger. The past two decades have seen a sharp decline in foreign assistance for agriculture. Many countries, including those most in need, have not allocated sufficient resources to farming and rural development.

On 13 October, 2006 the United Nations General Assembly appointed Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea as the world body’s next Secretary-General, to succeed Kofi Annan when he steps down on 31 December.
