In this, my first message on occasion of International Volunteer Day as Administrator of UNDP, I welcome the opportunity to applaud the efforts of volunteers worldwide who, together with the United Nations and the international community, are contributing to global efforts to fight extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

On December 6, 2005 the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Global Compact Forum will take place in Kyiv. The opening ceremony of the one-day forum will start at 15:00 at the Hotel “Natsionalny” (5 Lypska St.). The forum is organized by the United Nations in Ukraine with the support of private sector, government of Ukraine, trade and labor unions. The forum is aimed at promoting the corporate social responsibility concept and Global Compact principles, encouraging the adoption of socially responsible practices as a positive force for change in the Ukrainian marketplace and involving businesses in the socio-economic development process in Ukraine.


Kalman MIZSEI, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Assistant Administrator, Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to represent him in the Forum of Community of Democratic Choice to be held in Kyiv on December 2, 2005.

UNAIDS launched the new joint UNAIDS/WHO report, AIDS Epidemic Update 2005, featuring updated global and regional estimates on HIV and AIDS and new trends in the epidemic’s evolution on 21 November 2005, in Kyiv, Ukraine, for the Eastern Europe and Central Asian Region. This year’s report has a special section on HIV prevention.

KYIV, UKRAINE –Ukrainian sports star Liliya Podkopayeva was today designated as UN Goodwill Ambassador on HIV/AIDS in Ukraine.UN Resident Coordinator publicly announced the appointment at a press-conference on the 17th November 2005 at the UN House in Kyiv.

On November 15-16, 2005 UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Francis M.O’Donnell visited Donetsk and Lugansk regions to meet the representatives of local governance, civil society organisations and business sector.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to strengthen activities that use sport as a tool to promote development and peace.

On November 3-4, 2005 UN Resident Coordinator Francis M. O’Donnell took part in the international conference “Sixty Years of the UN: Taking Stock of Achievements and Paths to Greater Effectiveness in the 21st Century” and delivered to the participants the message from the Secretary General Kofi Annan.

On October 31 – November 2, 2005, in Chernihiv an important regional conference took place: the International Conference “Chernobyl-affected regions in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine – from recovery to new developmental approach”.

On October 27-28, 2005, a delegation of country-partners of the UNDP Crimea Integration and Development Programme visited the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. During this visit the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Francis M. O’Donnell, the Ambassador of Switzerland H.E. Christian Fassler, the Ambassador of Sweden H.E. John-Christer Ahlander along with other members of the delegation met with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Boris Deich, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Anatoliy Bordugov, other ministers, and heads of different committees of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, as well as rayon and community leaders.

UNICEF and UNAIDS Launch Global Campaign to Invigorate Action for the Millions of Children Affected by HIV/AIDS

Today, as we celebrate sixty years of our United Nations, we must recognize that the world today is very different from that of our founders. The United Nations must reflect this new age, and respond to its challenges - including, first and foremost, the knowledge that hundreds of millions of people are left defenceless against hunger, disease and environmental degradation, even though the world has the means to rescue them.

On October 24, 2005 UN Alley Ground Breaking Ceremony devoted to the 60th anniversary of the United Nations was held. The participants of the ceremony were UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Francis M. O’Donnell, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Borys Tarasyuk, First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Adam Martynyuk, Head of Kyiv Administration Oleksandr Omelchenko, Heads of UN agencies, the representatives of the diplomatic corps to Ukraine, and Ukrainian peacekeepers veterans, around 500 students of the European University and children from UNESCO school in Kyiv.

To commemorate the United Nations’ 60th anniversary, the UN Office in Ukraine and the National Opera of Ukraine held a gala concert Music from Every Continent on Sunday 23 October at the National Opera House.

On October 22, 2005 the Golden Liliya International Festival was held in honour of the United Nations’ International Year of Sport and Physical Education, and also celebrated the UN’s 60th anniversary.

The FCB MA Ukraine advertising agency has created an advertising campaign for the United Nations Office in Ukraine in celebration of the organization’s 60th anniversary.

Chornobyl’s recovery depends on long-term social and economic development on the community and regional levels and an effective information policy, concludes Chernobyl’s Legacy: Health, Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact, a report just released in Vienna by the Chernobyl Forum. The three-volume, 600-page report incorporates the work of hundreds of scientists, economists and health experts, and assesses the 20-year impact of the largest nuclear accident in history.

Kyiv, 5 October 2005 – A press conference was held today to announce the fifth annual Golden Liliya International Festival, to be held on 22 October at the Kyiv Palace of Sport. This year’s festival is in honour of the United Nations’ International Year of Sport and Physical Education, and will also celebrate the UN’s sixtieth anniversary.
