International conference concerning overcoming poverty
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is organizing an International Conference on Poverty Alleviation to be held on 16 April, 2008 from 9:30 to 18:00 in Kyiv, Ukraine at the Teacher's House (57 Volodymyrska, str.).
The Conference will be a one-day large-scale international event to discuss issues of poverty from the global, regional and Ukrainian perspectives.
Conference goal
During the Conference participants will have the possibility to discuss main poverty patterns in Ukraine and learn about best international practices and instruments that were successfully applied in other transition economies. Finally, the conference will promote business practices and strategic public-private partnerships that help reduce poverty.
Conference participants will take part in two plenary sessions during which they will analyse overview of poverty in transition economies and poverty patterns in Ukraine. Three parallel sessions will also take place on methodology, poverty monitoring and measurement techniques, on social protection models based on case studies from countries in the region and the role of private sector in poverty alleviation.

Leading international experts from Poland, Bulgaria and Slovakia, representatives of Ukrainian Government Mr. Ivan Vasyunyk, Vice Prime-Minister of Ukraine, Mr. Oleksandr Shlapak, First Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine, Ms. Lyudmyla Denysova, Minister of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine, Mr. Mykhailo Papyiev, Member of the Parliament of Ukraine, Social Policy Committee are to attend the event.
Also the representatives of private sector, NGO's and scientists will be involved in the Conference. Among them are Ms. Ella Libanova, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Science of Ukraine, Director of National Institute of Demography and Social Studies, Mr. Valeriy Geyets, Member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of Institute of Economy and Forecasting, Ms. Nataliya Vlasenko, Deputy Head of the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, Mr. Karl Shturen, Executive Director, "Chumak" (Ukraine) and others.
Special guest-speaker of the Conference will be Ms. Kori Udovicki, Assistant Secretary General and Assistant Administrator of UNDP, UNDP Regional Director for Europe and the CIS. The event will also be attended by Mr. Francis O'Donnell, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Ukraine, World Bank Representatives, Representative of United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), UNDP, UNICEF.
