Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Compact Forum:
On December 6, 2005 the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Global Compact Forum will take place in Kyiv. The opening ceremony of the one-day forum will start at 15:00 at the Hotel “Natsionalny” (5 Lypska St.). The forum is organized by the United Nations in Ukraine with the support of private sector, government of Ukraine, trade and labor unions. The forum is aimed at promoting the corporate social responsibility concept and Global Compact principles, encouraging the adoption of socially responsible practices as a positive force for change in the Ukrainian marketplace and involving businesses in the socio-economic development process in Ukraine. This high-level forum will bring the representatives of private sector/champions of CSR, Government of Ukraine, UN Agencies, international development organizations, trade and labor unions, civil society organizations and international guests to discuss the development impact of CSR. The forum will explore the challenges and opportunities of establishing a comprehensive CSR policy in Ukraine, will draw on tried-and-tested techniques. This is a candid event that will present CSR and Global Compact in a business-case context, respond to the bottom-line challenges and form the first national network/coalition on responsible businesses. The 2005-UN survey on 'Corporate Social Responsibility Trend in Ukraine' will be presented first time during the forum. In September 2000, 189 heads of state and government, including Ukraine, ratified the Millennium Declaration, marking a global commitment to address extreme poverty while promoting gender equality, education, health care and environmental sustainability. Indeed, the related eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) include specific targets and indicators, to be achieved by 2015. Ukraine is going through an important period of realizing its goal to elevate the social, economic and democratic life to a level set in the Ukrainian MDGs and consistent with the European standards. While the main responsibility for the achievement of the MDGs lies with the government, the private sector has an equally vital role. Through responsible and ethical practices, the private sector could make a unique and significant contribution to the MDGs realization. In this context, especially the role of business through socially responsible business practices is quite new for the Ukrainian marketplace. The sponsors of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Compact Forum are UMC, Gestalt Consulting Group, System Capital Management, the Eurasia Foundation, Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) which is implementing the Ukraine Citizen Action Network (UCAN). The representatives of the Ukrainian and Foreign Mass media are cordially invited to participate in the Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Compact Forum in Kyiv (the Agenda of the Forum is below attached).
