KYIV, UKRAINE - On March 25, 2006, Mr. Francis M. O’Donnell, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Ukraine and UNDP Resident Representative participated in the grand opening ceremony of the international gymnastics championship “Stella Zakharova Cup”. The sport event took place on March 25-26, 2006 at the Palace of Sport in Kyiv. The “Stella Zakharova Cup” was held under the auspices of the United Nations Office in Ukraine and was devoted to the 20th Commemoration Anniversary of Chornobyl Catastrophe. The participants at the opening ceremony also included Ms. Stella Zakharova, Olympic games champion in rhythmic gymnastics; Mr. Oleksandr Omelchenko, Mayor of Kyiv; Mr. Dmytro Petrushenko, Head of the Borodyanka Rayon State Administration. There are many social and economic projects that are being implemented at the Borodyanka Rayon by the UNDP Chornobyl Recovery and Development Programme (CRDP). There were also invited children from the Chornobyl affected areas at the Borodyanka Rayon to attend the opening ceremony of the “Stella Zakharova Cup” and the competitions. Since 2002, the “Stella Zakharova Cup” has been one of the most significant events in the sport life of Ukraine. The Cup was established with a purpose of popularization of rhythmic gymnastics both in Ukraine and abroad. Sportsmen from 13 countries took part in the gymnastics championship. Famous singers, including opera singer Volodymyr Gryshko, and dancers, sport and circus teams participated in the opening ceremony of the Cup.
