IOM: Honouring Ukrainians who Fight Human Trafficking

KYIV, September 7th, 2006 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ukraine and USAID/ Ukraine invite media representatives to participate at the Counter-Trafficking Award Ceremony, which will be held at Ivana Franka Drama Theatre.

The Ceremony will honour individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves with dedication and courage in the struggle against human trafficking. It also will contribute to raising awareness about the prevalence and alarming scale of the problem in Ukraine.

Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko is invited to deliver the evening’s keynote speech. H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden will participate in the Ceremony and highlight trafficking in children.

Ukrainian luminaries, Anatoliy Hostikoev and Natalia Sumskaya, will be Masters of Ceremony. The National Presidential Symphonic Orchestra, Green Grey, Gaytana, and children from the Ukrainian Academy of Arts will perform during the event.

The Ministers of the Interior and Family, Youth and Sport, Ambassadors of the United States and Sweden, as well as representatives from the European Commission will present awards.

Earl Gast, USAID Mission Director, Yuriy Pavlenko, the Minister of Family, Youth and Sport, Yuriy Lutsenko, the Minister of Interior, and Jeffrey Labovitz, Chief of Mission of Ukraine will be available for the questions from media related to the problem of trafficking in human beings in Ukraine at 18:00 on September 7th at Ivana Franka Drama Theatre, 3 Ivana Franka Sq., foyer of the 2d floor.

The Counter-Trafficking Award ceremony will follow the press conference.


The Ceremony is prepared and conducted in partnership with Bulhakov Creative Fund, Metro Cash & Carry Ukraine Ltd., and UT-1 TV channel.

About IOM Ukraine
IOM Ukraine began combating trafficking in Ukraine in 1998. Since 2000, IOM has assisted more than 3,000 Ukrainian victims of trafficking with support including medical care, psychological counselling, vocational training, and legal consultation, among other forms of support. Victims of trafficking assisted by IOM have returned from 50 countries in the world, of which 48 percent of victims return from Russian, Turkey and Poland.
