On UN Day Ukrainian Officials Discussed Cooperation with UN Country Team

24 October 2006. In Kyiv the UN Country Team members representing UNAIDS, UNDP, UNHCR, ILO, IOM, UNICEF met with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mr. Oleksandr Moroz. During the meeting, the participants discussed UN programmes implementation in Ukraine as well as support of the Parliament of Ukraine to these activities. The Speaker of the Parliament emphasized on continuity of reforms in decentralization, public administration, health sector and social services and economic development.

Later this day UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Francis M. O’Donnell and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Borys Tarasyuk delivered the joint press conference devoted to United Nations Day. Addressing the journalists, Mr. O’Donnell congratulated Ukraine on the effective membership in the United Nations. He emphasized that the partnership of UN and Ukraine will continue at the global and country level for the welfare of local people and world community. Mr. Tarasyuk stated that the Government of Ukraine, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in particular, are satisfied with the cooperation of the Resident Coordinator Office and the whole UN Country Team in Ukraine. More then 50 representatives of the leading mass media took part in the discussions.

In New York this day, for the tenth and the last time, the Secretary-General Kofi Annan offered his best wishes to the people all over the world on United Nations Day. In his message he assessed the progress and highlighted the remaining challenges and emphasized, “Over the past 10 years, we have made some big steps forward in our common struggle for development, security and human rights… But, there is so much that still needs doing”. On 24 October 1945, the United Nations was formally established after a majority of its founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution 2782 recommending that the day be observed as a public holiday.

The UN representative office in Ukraine has been opened in 1992. Currentely, UN Country Team consisting on 12 UN agencies, international organizations and associated instituions works to support the efforts of Ukraine in addressing topical issues in the economic, social, and institutional arenas, and both at the national and the local community level.
