On 19-20 May, 2007 the Embassy of Belgium in Ukraine, in partnership with the Belgian Club of Aeronautics and the UN Country Team in Ukraine organized a unique event for children from vulnerable families, orphans, and children affected by AIDS.
Starting at the Museum of Folk Architecture in Pyrogovo, Kyiv, over 150 children were given unforgettable trips in the Belgian hot air balloon. The balloon was decorated with various banners, including of the UN system in Ukraine.
During the event in Kyiv and Lviv, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and other UN agencies distributed printed information and education materials on the prevention of HIV infection among children and young people who attended the event.
Other partners included the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine, and the non-governmental organization “Sunshine” that works with vulnerable children. Financial support for the event was provided by Shell. The event was continued on May 20th in Lviv, with the personal support of the Mayor of Lviv. The flights were organized in the picturesque park location in downtown Lviv.
This was an important, grass-roots event that helped support children affected by AIDS, and worked to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS in Ukraine, especially among young people.
