island at 10:00 the Gather Harvest of Garbage on Trukhaniv
Island event is organized by the Kyiv
Lions Club in partnership with the United Nations office in Ukraine. This way the organizers decided to join the global
initiative "Clean up the World" that mobilizes annually 35 000 people from over
100 countries under aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme. This
year "Clean up the World" will take place worldwide on 14-16 September. We invite
all conscious Kyiv residents to join us in cleaning our city.
Autumn is the time for harvest as well for
garbage harvest. The Kyiv Lions Club and the United Nations office in Ukraine invite
every conscious Kyiv resident who is tired to see heaps of rubbish in the green
zone of our city "to harvest garbage" on Trukhaniv island.
On 15 September 2007
at 10:00 we gather near abandoned cafe "Kiltze", which is near to foot-bridge and
then disperse over the island's territory, collect garbage and bring it to the
central alley. Each person will get a
pair of rubber gloves and garbage bag. For every FULL returned bag the
participant will receive one "working day" compensation, which could be
exchanged for beer or hot-dog during a follow-up small celebration. Company NAI
Pickard has already joint the initiative and agreed to provide all necessary
equipment, food and beer, in honor of their company 15th anniversary
in Ukraine. All staff of the company agreed to participate in this initiative.

The Lions Club is the biggest
charity organization with over 14 million members in 40 000 clubs of 190
countries. The Kyiv Lions Club comprises over 50 permanent members, among which
top managers of leading Ukrainian and international companies. The aim of the
Club is to gather money and pass them to trustful charity funds to help people
who need it the most.
The Representative office of the United Nations in Kyiv was opened in
1992. Currently, the United Nations in Ukraine
is represented by 13 resident agencies, organizations and associated
institutions working to improve the lives of all people in Ukraine by

"Clean
up the world" campaign started in 1989, when Australian yachtsman Yan Kirnan,
became angry with amount of garbage coastwise and organized cleaning of Sydney
harbour with over 40 000 participants. In 1993 the campaign became
international with headquarters in Sydney.
Nowadays campaign unites hundreds of members around the world. In year 2006,
625 organizations were registered in "Clean up the World": 207 from Africa, 171
from Pacific Asia; 82 from Europe, 132 from Latin America and Caribbean; 11
from South America and 16 from West Asia. They
were established both by small community groups and by national organizations,
which undertake initiatives on environment protection during the whole year.
Every year campaign "Clean up the World" gathers bigger amount of participants.
