27 January - International Day of commemoration in the memory of the vicitims of the Holocaust

holocaust.jpgThe Holocaust resulted in the murder of one third of the Jews people along with countless members of other minorities including Roma, handicapped, religious leaders. About 6 million Jews of Europe were perished in 27 countries including 1.5 million of the Ukrainian Jews.

According to the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7, January 27 has been designated as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. To prevent future acts of genocide, the resolution requests Members States to develop educational curricula on the lessons of the Holocaust and to support efforts in mobilizing civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education.

What: The journalists are invited to take part in the round table discussion "Memory of the Holocaust and Ukrainian Society: Educational Perspective" that will be conducted on January 28, 2008 in Kyiv by the United Nations in Ukraine, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Centre for Holocaust Studies.

Who: UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Francis M. O'Donnell, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Ivan Vakarchuk, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Veselovskiy, Ambassador of the State of Israel to Ukraine Zina Kalay-Kleitman, Director of the Philosophy Institute of the National Academy of Ukraine Myroslav Popovych are invited as well as the representatives of other international organizations, teachers, students, scientists, civil society experts.

When:  on January 28, 2008 at 10:30 in the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2 Velyka Zhytomyrska Str.). Registration of the participants starts at 10:00.
