WHO/Europe: Call for applications for photo competition 2008

The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) is holding a photograph competition to support the WHO European Ministerial Conference on Health Systems: "Health Systems, Health and Wealth", which will take place in Tallinn, Estonia on 25-27 June 2008.

The Regional Office invites both professional and amateur photographers to participate.

Please send in photographs showing any aspect of health (e.g. doctors, nurses and patients; hospitals, medical centres/ polyclinics and hospital dispensaries; health education, research and training; social workers in action; medical assistance in emergencies; medical equipment and technologies; health promotion - people exercising, healthy food, health at home, etc.)

Deadline

The deadline for sending applications is 31 March 2008.

Selection and evaluation criteria

  • Professionals from the fields of photography, journalism and health systems from across the European Region will select the best pictures during April and May 2008.
  • The evaluation criteria will be: relevance to the theme, power of message, creativity and technical quality.

Prizes for the winners

  • The winning photographs will be presented at the WHO European Ministerial Conference in Tallinn, Estonia, on 25-27 June 2008, through media releases and on the WHO Regional Office for Europe web site.
  • Winners will receive a voucher for photographic equipment worth EURO 500 (first prize), EURO 250 (second prize), and EURO 100 (third prize), along with several awards of "special recognition".

Competition theme

A key concept for the Conference in Tallinn is the dynamic relationship between health systems, health and wealth. The Conference will explore how well-functioning health systems contribute not only to health but also to wealth and economic growth (through, for example, workforce development, increased productivity, alleviating the cost of illness, and lowering the number of those seeking early retirement), leading to social welfare. It will also investigate how productive investment in health systems has the potential to contribute to economic development for less wealthy countries.

Taking account of the Conference theme, "Health Systems, Health and Wealth", photos should illustrate one/several aspects of health systems, such as health care services, people, technology, health information, financing, regulation, education, governance and inter-sectoral cooperation.
