17 March 2008. Kyiv, Ukraine. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ukraine announces the Nationwide Contest «JOURNALISTS FOR INFORMED CHOICE about employment abroad” for the most informative and resonant article that clarified realities of employment abroad, helps make conscious choice and avoid disappointment, secure oneself from traps.
Experts estimate that nearly 3 million of our compatriots work abroad. This experience is positive for some and negative for many others. Even while in Ukraine, people might fall prey to fraudulent intermediaries and risk not only losing a lot of money but also health and sometimes even life itself. Being trusting and uninformed about realities of employment abroad might lead to troublesome situations – from merely disappointments to tragedies. IOM appeals to journalists to stand up for informed choice and safety of Ukrainian citizens.
Articles are eligible for the contest if published on any date from March 21 to May 21, 2008. The contest laureates will be acknowledged at the Awards Ceremony in June; a prize is foreseen for the best article (laptop). The Contest will be conducted within the IOM Awareness Campaign aimed at improving access of Ukrainian citizens to free reliable migrant advice. The campaign officially starts on March 21, 2008 and is supported by the European Commission.
All journalists interested to learn more about migration, in particular about traps in this sphere, how to safeguard oneself from them and where to find assistance, are cordially invited to participate in the Media Club that will be held on March 21, 2008, 11.00 am. to 12.30 pm. in the premises of the IOM Mission at 8 Mykhailivska Street, Kyiv.
