On 14 April 2008 international conference “Modern challenges for human rights and freedoms” will take place in Ukraine on the occasion of 60th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On the 14th of April at 10.00 a.m. a one-day International Conference “Modern challenges for human rights and freedoms” will be launched in Verkhovna Rada devoted to the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 10th anniversary of establishment of Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner institution of Ukraine.

This event will be attended by Human Rights Commissioner of Council of Europe, Vice-President of International Institute of  Ombudsman, President of European Institute of Ombudsman, ombudsmen of country-members of European Union, CIS, famous human-rights activists from all continents,  overall around 100 people from 50 countries, and also representatives of all branches of power, scientists, NGO’s, diplomatic corpus accredited in Ukraine.

During the conference poverty issues, labor migration, human trafficking, preventing tortures and international terrorism issues will be discussed. International conference “Modern challenges for human rights and freedomswill be held according to the following schedule: 10.00 - 12.30 – Conference opening and first plenary session (Verkhovna Rada Session Hall, 5 Hrushevskogo street).

Conference participants are planned to be addressed by President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, Council of Europe Commissioner on Human Rights Tomas Hammarberg, Prime-Minister of Ukraine Yuliya Tymoshenko, Head of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk, UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Francis ODonnell and Human Rights Commissioner Nina Karpachova.

12.45 - 13.30 – press-conference for national and foreign media with the participation of Ombudsman of Ukraine Nina Karpachova, Council of Europe Commissioner on Human Rights Tomas Hammarberg, Vice-President of International Institute of Ombudsman, Head of Ombudsmen Council of Austria Peter Kostelka and President of European Institute of Ombudsman Ulrich Galle (Ombudsman of federal land Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany).

14.30 - 18.00 – plenary session continuation (5 Hrushevskogo street). Conference opening and first plenary session of the International ConferenceTodays challenges for human rights and freedomswill be broadcasted by the 1st National TV Channel of Ukraine, ChannelRada”, Channel 5, and also channels of State TV and Radio CompanyWorld ServiceUkrainian TV and Radio Broadcastingthat is being broadcasted through the satellite to 109 countries of the world.More information:
