16 December, 2009. Kyiv, Ukraine – Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine ratified the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities and the respective Facultative Protocol
adopted by the UN General Assembly on 13 December 2006. Ukraine is the
77th country to have ratified the documents.
15 December 2009. Odesa - Kyiv - On 11-13 December 2009 the eighth Odessa National University Model UN took place in Odessa. The conference was held under the auspices of Odessa National University, with the academic and organizational support of Institute of Social Sciences, Odessa National University (ONU), the Ministry of Foreign Affaires of Ukraine, and UN Office in Ukraine, the financial support was provided by the International Renaissance Foundation.
10 December 2009. New-York - Kyiv - On the occasion of
the Human Rights Day UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted that no country is free of discrimination and invited people
everywhere, at all levels, to join the United
Nations and human rights defenders around the world in the fight
against discrimination.
Secretary - General message:
"No country is free of discrimination. We see
it everywhere, in many forms: old and new, covert and blatant, public
and private. It may appear as institutionalized racism, as ethnic
strife, as episodes of intolerance and rejection, or as an official
national version of history that denies the identity of others.
9 December 2009. New York – Kyiv – On the occasion of the
International Day of Fight against Corruption, Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon highlighted that corruption is one of the biggest
impediments to the world’s efforts to reach the Millennium Development
Goals.
4 December 2009. Kyiv, Ukraine - On 3 December the United Nations Volunteers programme
(UNV) and Ukrainian non-governmental organizations invited volunteers
to take part in 25 activities in 14 towns on the occasion of the
International Volunteer Day. Activities aimed to protect the
environment and to provide assistance to people in need will take place
on the “Volunteer weekend” on 5-6 December.
5 December 2009. New-York – Kyiv – On the occasion of the
International Volunteer Day, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted
that volunteers all over the world play important role in protecting
our planet and advancing the important causes for which the United
Nations works. The recent “Seal the Deal” and “Volunteering for our
Planet” campaigns are just the latest examples of how volunteers are
helping to shape our world.
3 December 2009. New York - Kyiv - UN appointed singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder Messenger of Peace.
Secretary-General's remarks at press conference introducing Stevie Wonder:
"We all know Stevie Wonder is a musical genius whose songs have given
pleasure and hope to millions of people around the world. He's also a great
humanitarian, who has campaigned against apartheid, for children in need,
and for persons with disabilities.
3 December 2009. Kyiv, Ukraine - The Government will send
the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to the
Verkhovna Rada [parliament] for further ratification. This was
announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko at a
special ad-hoc Government’s sitting, dedicated to finding solutions to
the problems faced by the people with disabilities in Ukraine on 3
December. UNDP Resident Representative Olivier Adam attended the sitting and delivered a keynote address.
3 December 2009. Geneva - Kyiv - On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Office, appealed to the world community:
"Today we focus on the goal of ensuring that the process of
realizing the Millennium Development Goals is inclusive of persons with
disabilities. This is necessary for their empowerment and that of their
communities.
3 December 2009, New York – Kyiv. The theme of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “making the Millennium Development Goals disability-inclusive.” As we prepare for next September’s MDG summit, we must ensure that our efforts are all-inclusive and improve living standards and quality of life for everyone.
